Here is a list of all the medical abbreviations used in the Dem Dx app:

  • SIRS – systemic inflammatory response syndrome

  • CXR – Chest X-ray

  • CAT/P. – computed axial tomography

  • AFB/TB – acid-fast bacilli/ Tuberculosis

  • L/N – lymph node

  • IDA – iron deficiency anaemia

  • CT CAP – Computerised tomography scan of the Chest Abdomen and Pelvis (CAP)

  • LGI MDM – lower GI Multi-Disciplinary Meeting

  • PID – pelvic inflammatory disease or prolapsed intervertebral disc (depends on context)

    Gastroenterology:

  • A/W – alive and well

  • SOL – space occupying lesion

  • RUQ – right upper quadrant

  • O/E – on examination

  • IHD – ischaemic heart disease

  • EF – ejection fraction

  • PPI – proton pump inhibitor

  • AKI – acute kidney injury

  • IVDU – intravenous drug user

  • CT KUB- CT scan of the Kidneys, Ureters and Bladder

  • TTG – tissue transglutaminase

  • ETOH – ethanol (alcohol)

  • OCP – oral contraceptive pill

  • CDT – C. diff toxin

  • MC&S – Microscopy, culture and sensitivity

  • DM – Diabetes mellitus

  • TFTs- thyroid function tests

  • CLD- chronic liver disease

    Respiratory:

  • RR – respiratory rate

  • ARB – angiotensin receptor blocker

  • FVC – forced vital capacity

  • FEV1- forced expiratory volume

  • HRCT – high resolution computerised tomography

  • JVP – jugular venous pressure

  • DLCO- diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide

  • ABG – arterial blood gas

  • DVT – deep vein thrombosis

  • PE – pulmonary embolism

  • URTI- upper respiratory tract infection

  • HRT – hormone replacement therapy

    Cardiology:

  • CAD- coronary artery disease

  • PVD – peripheral vascular disease

  • BNP -brain natriuretic peptide

  • BBB – bundle branch block

  • AAA – abdominal aortic aneurysm

  • PPM- permanent pacemaker

  • ICD – implantable cardiac defibrillators

  • RAS- renal artery stenosis

  • AVRT – atrioventricular reciprocating tachycardia

  • NAD – nothing abnormal detected

  • ABPM- ambulatory blood pressure measurement

  • AF- atrial fibrillation

  • SVT – supraventricular tachycardia

  • PAD- patent ductus arteriosus

  • VSD/ ASD – ventricular/ atrial septal defect

  • Hx- history

    Neurology:

  • ICP – intracranial pressure

  • GCS- Glasgow Coma Score

  • MRV- magnetic resonance venography

  • ADEM- acute disseminated encephalomyelitis

  • LP – lumbar puncture

  • CN – cranial nerve

  • A/W – alive and well

  • LMN – lower motor neurone

  • CSF- cerebrospinal fluid

  • MRA- magnetic resonance angiography

  • PSP- progressive supranuclear palsy

  • CBD- cortico-basal degeneration

  • Ix- investigations

  • NCS- nerve conduction studies

  • TOR1A – torsin A gene

  • NF1 – neurofibromatosis type 1

  • SOB -shortness of breath

  • ATM – ATM serine/threonine kinase gene

  • HONK- hyperosmotic non-keratotic state

  • ABCD2 score- calculator for the risk of stroke in the days following a TIA

  • MMSE- mini mental state examination

  • HTN- hypertension
